The Union / Spartanburg Commuter Shed, consisting of the three South Carolina Counties of Union, Cherokee, and Spartanburg, experienced high population growth between 2018 and 2023.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the Union / Spartanburg Commuter Shed increased from 372,764 persons in 2014 to 421,385  by 2023, representing a growth rate over the 10 years of 13.04% with an annual rate of 1.3%, which significantly exceeded the United States annual average of 0.47% for the same period.

In 2023, the Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had an annual growth rate of 1.99%, ranking it the sixth fastest-growing MSA in the nation and the second fastest-growing in South Carolina. This trend is expected to continue.
