The Upstate Commuter Shed, consisting of the three South Carolina counties of Union, Cherokee, and Spartanburg experienced moderate population growth between 2010 and 2010.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the Upstate Commuter Shed increased from 368,610 persons in 2010 to 411,457 by 2020 representing a growth rate over the 10 year period of 11.6% with an annual rate of 1.16%, which exceeds United States average of 0.74% and South Carolina’s average of 1.07% for the same period.  The 2022 Estimate for the U.S. Census Bureau is 428,704. 

The annual growth rate of 0.89% between 1998 and 2019 ranks the commuter shed in the top 40 percentile among similar large economic regions around the country including the Jacksonville, FL, Raleigh, NC, and Greenville, SC economic areas.
